A new award category will be introduced at this year's Oireachtas Media Awards, recognising Irish language online creators. The "Irish Language Creator of the Year" award aims to celebrate those producing content in Irish on digital platforms.

The media awards, established in 1999, annually recognise Irish language media across television, radio, film, and now online platforms. This year's ceremony will take place on October 28, the first day of Oireachtas na Samhna.

To be eligible, creators must use at least two multimedia platforms, have a combined total of at least 5,000 followers across those platforms, be 18 or older, and have published content within the past year.

The growth of online content creation in Irish has been notable, with creators like Máire Ní Churraoin, Laura Pakenham, and Molly Nic Céile amassing thousands of followers.

Belfast-based content creator Anna Nic Gafraidh, who makes videos on TikTok and Instagram, said the award is long overdue. She noted that many people are creating content on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, and a new generation wants to inspire young people. She said she watches TikTok more than television and believes young people are doing the same.

Nic Gafraidh receives messages from Irish speakers worldwide who want to watch vlogs in Irish without subtitles. She mentioned an encounter at Féile na Gealaí where a student told her that she inspired her to study Irish at university.

Oireachtas CEO Máirín Nic Dhonnchadha said the new award reflects the growth and health of Irish online, demonstrating the importance of the language being alive on digital platforms where young people spend their time. She said creators across the country and abroad are bringing Irish to new audiences.

Údarás na Gaeltachta CEO Tomás Ó Síocháin said they are pleased to support the award, recognising the vital role of multimedia creators in promoting Irish naturally among young audiences. He encouraged everyone who enjoys Irish content online to nominate creators.

Nominations close at 5pm on Monday, September 21, via the Oireachtas na Gaeilge website.
