The Omagh branch of the Samaritans has closed after operating for more than 50 years.

The closure affects around 40 volunteers, some of whom have served for over four decades at the charity's base in Campsie. Samaritans confirmed the closure, attributing it to circumstances beyond anyone's control.

Volunteers have been offered opportunities to transfer to other branches across Northern Ireland. Samaritans said all volunteers received support and one-to-one phone calls offering guidance around relocation, and some have begun transferring to other locations.

The charity said the decision followed careful consideration and discussions involving the central charity, branch trustees and the regional director. It stated the closure was not directly linked to its wider restructuring programme, but reflected a combination of longstanding challenges and wider issues affecting many branches.

The closure comes over a year after Fermanagh and Omagh District Council honoured the branch for five decades of service.

Local Sinn Féin councillor Barry McElduff said he would propose an informal meeting between the council and Samaritans to explore the circumstances. He noted there are many volunteers in the area and great need for the service.
