The number of deaths registered in Northern Ireland for the week ending 26 June 2026 was 281, which is 30 fewer than the expected figure of 311 based on mortality trends.

Provisional data from the official statistics body shows that male deaths totalled 141, compared to 140 female deaths. Both were below the expected counts of 159 for males and 151 for females.

So far in 2026, up to 26 June, a total of 9,136 deaths have been registered. Over two-thirds (67.0%) of these were among people aged 75 and over. The gender split was nearly even, with 50.4% male and 49.6% female.

Of those deaths, 45.4% occurred in hospital, 17.5% in care homes, and 37.1% at residential addresses, hospices, or other settings.

The week’s figures also recorded 37 deaths where flu or pneumonia was mentioned on the death certificate, bringing the year-to-date total for such mentions to 1,620.

The number of deaths that actually occurred in the week ending 26 June, including those registered up to 1 July, was provisionally put at 235.
