A woman died and a man was seriously injured after being struck by a car in Belfast’s York Street area in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The driver, a 22-year-old man, fled the scene but was later arrested by police in the Cavehill area and remains in custody.

The victim has been named as Raven Adams, originally from County Tipperary.

Police said they received a report of the collision at around 2.40am. Emergency services attended but Ms Adams was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured man was taken to hospital for treatment.

Detective Inspector Stewart of the Police Service’s collision investigation unit confirmed details of the incident and said inquiries are ongoing.

DUP MLA Philip Brett said the local community was in shock and he was deeply saddened by the event. He praised the emergency services for their quick response.

The road was closed for a time but has since fully reopened.

Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage to come forward, quoting reference number 181 16/07/26.
