Drummer, 77, marks 72nd Twelfth and vows to march on until 100
Cecil Wilson has taken part in every Twelfth of July demonstration for more than seven decades. The 77-year-old drummer with the Garvary Flute Band, from Garvary in County Fermanagh, first marched when he was about four years old.
He recalled that his initial Twelfth, 72 years ago, fell on a wet day. This year, however, the march in Maguiresbridge took place in summer heat, which he said he does not enjoy. Despite the warmth, he described the return march as manageable and expressed no hesitation about completing the route.
Wilson is accompanied in the band by his twin brother Noel, also a drummer. Over the years, Wilson switched from the flute to the drum, an instrument he now prefers. He singled out Maguiresbridge as a favourite venue, noting the short march and the closeness of the crowd, which makes conversation easy.
His attendance record is unbroken. He confirmed he has never missed a Twelfth and intends to continue indefinitely. Wilson, who turns 78 in August, stated his goal is to be on parade until he reaches 100.
