A summer Irish language camp in Tempo, County Fermanagh, saw 80 to 90 children attend during the week of July 6-10. Gaeltacht Sa Bhaile, now in its third year, ran daily sessions at Tempo Community Centre.

The camp was founded by Phil Flanagan of Tempo and Ciarán Mag Uidhir of Roslea. This year’s programme was led by Grace McCann and Róisín McQuade, with contributions from Ulster GAA representatives Tim McCann and Aoife de Bhál.

Mornings focused on spoken Irish and everyday conversation. Afternoons included activities such as céilí dancing, traditional singing, sport, and outdoor learning. The week concluded with a talent show where each group performed pieces showcasing the language.

Ciarán Mag Uidhir said the initiative makes Irish language learning accessible to families who might not afford residential Gaeltacht courses. He noted the camp serves as both an alternative and preparation for those heading to Donegal.

He also credited the voluntary organisers who return each year, saying the community’s support was vital. He observed that children in Fermanagh have a natural affinity for the language, underpinning local music and sport.

Preparations are under way for the 2027 camp, with further details expected in the coming months.
