Freitas captures three titles as Fermanagh hosts national tennis event
Players from seven nations competed in the Fermanagh Senior Tour 500 Open at Irvinestown Tennis Club, a National Tour event that drew entries from Ireland, Portugal, England, Germany, Lithuania, South Africa, and the Philippines.
Portugal’s Rita Freitas was the dominant performer of the tournament, winning the Women’s Championship Open singles, the Women’s Championship Doubles with Anna Glover, and the Mixed Championship alongside Ireland’s Paddy Cosgrave. Freitas, the top seed in the women’s singles, defeated a field that included second seed Isabella Connor and Eve Callaghan. In the doubles final, she and Glover overcame Kathryn Gaw and Kerri Russell.
In the Men’s Championship Open, Ireland’s Daniel Borisov claimed the title after advancing through the draw. The semi-finals also featured top seed Fred Gil of Portugal and second seed Cian McDonnell.
The Men’s Championship Doubles trophy went to Gil and Brody Lee Stafford, who beat Ross McCarey and Cian McDonnell in the final. Daniel Borisov and his brother Mark reached the semi-finals of the same event.
Local players featured prominently in the graded competitions. John Slowey won the Men’s Singles 2 title, Joseph Doyle took Men’s Singles 6, and Andrew Williams secured Men’s Singles 4. Trudy Cochrane, Katrina Deas, and Kirsty Keegan each won women’s events, while Cochrane and Orla Malone combined to claim the Women’s Doubles 2 crown.
