A young kart racer from County Armagh has delivered a creditable performance on the world stage.

Sophie Evans, aged 10 and from Portadown, competed in the Ninja Karting World Final at Lochgelly in Scotland. She was one of only three female competitors in the field of more than 38 drivers.

After practice on the Friday evening, Evans carried her pace into the Saturday heats. She produced two steady drives to qualify for the final, lining up on row 11.

The final was marked by fast racing and several incidents, but Evans steered clear and finished just outside the top 20.

The event was her first and final World Final appearance. Her team’s stated aim was to complete the race and savour the occasion, and she met both targets.

With the World Final behind her, Evans will now focus on the British Championships.
