A planning application to convert a retail unit and garage on Caddells Lane in Rathfriland into two bedsits has been withdrawn.

The proposal, lodged on April 11, 2026, outlined two self-contained apartments each featuring a living room with dining area, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and storeroom.

Within days, 52 letters of objection were submitted. Residents cited a lack of parking, health and safety concerns, and a view that the accommodation type would not benefit Rathfriland. Several objections had parts of their content redacted.

One detailed objection argued the scheme would over-intensify the site, clash with the surrounding traditional residential character, and likely cause noise and disturbance from a higher turnover of occupants. The objector also highlighted inadequate parking provision, waste storage problems, and doubts over whether the building could deliver sufficient natural light and outlook for future residents without harming neighbouring properties.

The objector requested refusal of the application or significant revisions to address density, parking, and residential amenity. The application has now been withdrawn.
