Approval granted for six apartments at former Portadown Boots store
Planning permission has been granted to convert a former Boots pharmacy in Portadown into six one-bedroom apartments.
The vacant three-storey property stands on the corner of Thomas Street and Hanover Street. Under the approved scheme, two apartments will occupy each floor.
Stewartstown-based Ardina Investments lodged the change-of-use application early last year. Works will include removing the existing shopfront, chimney, and signboard, and creating new window openings at ground level to match the upper floors. All windows will be replaced with uPVC double glazed units, and a new door installed. The rear and side areas will provide parking, bin and bicycle storage, and a communal space.
ABC Council received two letters of objection. One neighbour argued the unit should stay retail to bring life and jobs to the area. Another raised concerns about noise, vandalism, and balls being kicked against their wall.
Planning officers found no evidence to support the objections. They noted the proposal brings a derelict building back into use and that the area is predominantly residential, making the conversion compatible. The council’s environmental health and building control departments raised no issues over noise or soundproofing.
The planners’ report concluded that the external appearance would remain largely unchanged, with only modest alterations at ground-floor level. The development was found to respect the streetscape and character of the site.
Approval has been issued subject to a number of conditions.
