Derry technology leader receives honorary doctorate from Ulster University
A Derry-born technology leader has been honoured by Ulster University for his contributions to regional employment and innovation. John Harkin OBE received an Honorary Doctor of Science during a ceremony at the university’s Derry campus.
The university said the award recognises Mr Harkin’s global business achievements and his sustained investment in the economic and social future of the North-West. His efforts include founding Alchemy in 2018, an insurance technology company that created high-value jobs and was later integrated into global group NTT DATA.
Mr Harkin’s career spans more than three decades in technology and consulting. He began at Peat Marwick, now KPMG, before working for Apple in Paris and Cupertino. He later held senior roles at DXC, PwC and KPMG, leading major IT transformation programmes in cities including New York, Sydney and San Francisco.
Despite his international work, Mr Harkin has maintained strong ties to his home city. He has supported local cultural and charitable organisations such as The Playhouse and Cancer Fund for Children, and has contributed to initiatives like the Mary Peters Trust and les Foyer des Artistes.
Mr Harkin said it was an honour to receive the recognition from Ulster University in his home city, and he noted his belief in creating opportunities locally. He thanked colleagues and noted his pride in joining the university’s alumni.
