Moneyreagh puppy raiser named Guide Dogs Newcomer of the Year
A Moneyreagh woman has been named Newcomer of the Year by Guide Dogs during a ceremony at Stormont.
Kathryn Kerr was recognised for her first year as a puppy raiser, having cared for a dog named Zeb, who is now completing his training in Scotland, and currently raising a five-month-old puppy called Glen.
The event, held in the Long Gallery of Parliament Buildings, was opened by Communities Minister Gordon Lyons, who said recognising volunteers was important because they make a difference to the lives of people with sight loss through their time and fundraising.
Ms Kerr's nomination highlighted her fundraising efforts, including raising over £1,000 at a coffee morning for Zeb's first birthday. She also runs an Instagram account to share her puppy raising journey.
She assists at fundraising events organised by local groups across Northern Ireland. The charity said it urgently needs more volunteer fundraisers to support local events and help raise money for an important cause.
Guide Dogs marked 40 years in Northern Ireland this year. The cost of breeding, raising and training each guide dog has risen to £77,000, up from £34,600 in 2019, making the work of fundraising groups more vital, the charity stated.
