Gaza Student Scheme Extended for 2026/27, Northern Ireland Politicians Say
Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald and Sinn Féin MP John Finucane have welcomed the British government’s decision to renew the Gaza Student Scheme for the 2026/27 academic year. The programme enables students from Gaza to leave the territory and take up confirmed university places in Britain and Northern Ireland.
Archibald said education offers opportunity and hope even in the most challenging circumstances, describing the situation in Gaza as a genocide. She had previously urged the British government to extend the scheme and praised the role played by local universities last year in supporting incoming students. Their arrival, she said, strengthened the academic community and enriched campus life. Archibald added she would work with the British government to ensure safe passage for future students.
John Finucane, who represents North Belfast, also voiced his support. He highlighted the chance the scheme gives to students to escape conflict and continue their studies. Finucane said his office had been involved in securing safe travel for students last year, working alongside the British government, the Economy Minister, and other authorities. He kept in regular contact with the students after their arrival and offered to provide similar assistance to new applicants.
Both representatives acknowledged the leadership of Northern Ireland’s universities, fellow students, and the wider community in helping the first cohort settle in. They expect that support to be repeated this year.
