The coroner investigating the death of teenager Noah Donohoe has asked the Attorney General to examine social media posts made during evidence from a senior police witness.

Mr Justice Rooney stated that the posts were brought to his attention before Detective Chief Inspector Tom Phillips had finished giving evidence. He said any such commentary, beyond accurate reporting by the press, is entirely inappropriate and may amount to contempt of court.

The coroner said he had repeatedly warned against social media activity that could prejudice the inquest. The coroner’s service has been in contact with the Attorney General’s office, which may bring proceedings for contempt where there is a risk of interfering with the administration of justice.

Noah Donohoe, 14, disappeared on 21 June 2020 while cycling through north Belfast. His body was found six days later in a storm drain. The inquest, which began at the end of January, is expected to conclude in the coming weeks.
