Author Bernie McQuillan will visit Fintona Library on Wednesday evening to discuss her debut novel, The Lobster Pot.

The event runs from 5.45pm to 7pm and is part of a wider library tour to promote the book, which was published in May.

Mrs McQuillan was born in Fintona and now lives in Belfast. She said the town's library sparked her love of reading during her childhood in the 1970s. "The library was a big part of my life," she said. "It's where I developed my love of books."

The novel is set in a fictional coastal village called Rathmore, but the author noted that the landscape mirrors Fintona, with a river, a bridge and a forest. "I suppose you draw on what you know, even without realising it," she said.

The story blends mystery and drama and was inspired by the history of Glenveagh Castle in County Donegal, including the curse said to have followed landlord John Adair after mass evictions in the 19th century. Mrs McQuillan said she wondered how such a history might shape children raised in its shadow.

Early sales have been encouraging, particularly for a debut author, with support from independent bookshops. Mrs McQuillan described the process as slow and steady, adding that every event counts when building a readership.

She is already working on a second project linked to caves and local history, following a prize-winning caving story.

The Fintona Library event is free to attend.
