A Strabane-based support group for parents and carers of children who struggle to attend school because of anxiety has been given £1,000 by Power NI.

The Anxiety Based School Avoidance (ABSA) peer support group received the donation through the energy company’s Brighter Communities programme.

The group was launched in February 2025 with support from the charity Strive NI. It is a small grassroots organisation run by parents, set up in response to the number of children, particularly those who are neurodivergent, who find it difficult to go to school due to anxiety.

The service offers a relaxed space where parents can meet others facing similar difficulties, helping to reduce isolation. Families also get practical advice and information about available services.

A representative of ABSA Parent Support Strabane, known as Carol, said the funding would allow the group to deliver calming wellbeing activities and produce practical resources that parents can use during sessions and at home. She added that the group gives families a safe environment to talk and share experiences.
