Planning permission has been granted for 96 new homes on agricultural land at Blackthorn Rise in Larne, with associated traffic signals at a nearby junction expected by the end of 2027.

The Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s Planning Committee approved the reserved matters application unanimously at a meeting in Ballymena. The 3.5-hectare site will accommodate a mix of dwelling types, including 17 detached houses, 58 semi-detached houses, six townhouses, two bungalows, four maisonettes and nine apartments.

Eight objections were lodged with planners, raising concerns over over-development, the impact on the road network, increased traffic, loss of green space and potential overlooking. However, the Department for Infrastructure’s roads division raised no objection, and the planning officer recommended approval.

A key condition is the delivery of traffic signalisation at the Donaghy’s Lane junction. Committee members heard that the signals are programmed for installation towards the end of 2027, according to planning consultant Tom Stokes.

Alderman Paul Reid of the Democratic Unionist Party noted existing congestion on Donaghy’s Lane and Antiville Road, and welcomed the prospect of the new lights. He proposed acceptance of the officer’s recommendation.

Sinn Féin Councillor James McKeown seconded the proposal, and the committee voted unanimously in favour.
