Bishop Michael Router will be formally installed as Bishop of Derry at a Mass in St Eugene's Cathedral this week. After the ceremony, he will greet members of the congregation at the cathedral's front door.

Pope Leo nominated Bishop Router to the role after accepting the resignation of Bishop Donal McKeown, who stepped down on July 16 after 12 years in the position. Bishop Router, a County Cavan native, transfers from his role as Auxiliary Bishop of Armagh, where he worked alongside Archbishop Eamon Martin for seven years.

Speaking after his nomination, Bishop Router said he had been told by many people, including Archbishop Martin, that Derry is a wonderful place with open, welcoming and friendly people. He said he found that to be true and was very thankful for the welcome he received. He said he felt privileged to take on the role and looked forward to working with the priests and people of the diocese.

Addressing the people of Derry directly, Bishop Router said the city's reputation resonates throughout the world. He said it is a wonderful place to live and to be, and he is privileged to be among its people and to shepherd the diocese. He said he hopes to provide guidance and inspiration as a person of faith and thanked them for their welcome so far.

Bishop McKeown, who is stepping down, welcomed his successor as someone who brings great experience and wisdom to the role.
