The Nieuw Statendam has become the largest cruise ship ever to call at Lough Foyle, bringing a record single-day total of passengers and crew to the region. The Holland America Line vessel, measuring 300 metres in length and just under 100,000 gross tonnes, arrived as part of a 28-day Arctic Circle and British Isles voyage.

The call marks the company’s first return to the lough since the Prinsendam visited in 2018. Aboard were up to 2,666 guests and 1,053 crew members, the highest visitor volume ever handled by Foyle Port in a single call. A plaque exchange ceremony was held on board between the ship’s captain and port officials.

Foyle Port’s Harbour Master and Operations Director, Captain Bill McCann, said the visit was a landmark moment for the port and the wider North West. He noted that the record passenger numbers and Holland America Line’s commitment to return visits in 2027, 2028 and 2029 demonstrate strong confidence in the port’s facilities and local tourism.

Karen Farndell, associate vice president for sales and marketing at Holland America Line, said the stop allows guests to experience Northern Ireland’s history, culture and landscapes. She added that the company is focused on connecting passengers with destinations while caring for local communities and environments.

Shore excursions for visiting passengers included a new live production called Celtic Grá, which features Celtic music and dance and has been performed internationally. Niamh McCarthy, Managing Director of Excursions Ireland, said the Foyle region continues to grow as a cruise destination thanks to a progressive port and diverse visitor experiences. She said 2026 is already shaping up to be a busy season for the port.
