A man is being treated in hospital for serious injuries after an assault in Newcastle in the early hours of Friday morning.

Police received a report at approximately 1.45am of a man with a head injury in the Main Street area. Officers attended and the man was taken to hospital by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. His injuries are believed to be serious.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and criminal damage. He remains in police custody.

Enquiries are ongoing and police are appealing for witnesses. They ask anyone who was in the area at the time or has footage to contact them on 101, quoting reference 115 05/06/26. Information can also be provided through the PSNI website or anonymously to Crimestoppers.
