Residents in the St James' area of West Belfast have begun preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

Flags representing all participating nations are being erected this week ahead of the tournament's opening on June 11.

A street party is scheduled for June 6. The event will include fancy dress, children's activities, and games between residents.

Kevin McCall, who helps organise the party, said the event began 16 years ago and has grown each cycle.

He said a sweepstake assigns countries to participants for fancy dress, and activities will include bouncy castles and an old-school sports day with prizes.

McCall said the expansion of the tournament to 48 nations means more flags than in previous years.

He added that he hopes Spain will win the tournament.
