Environment Minister Andrew Muir has stated that remediation work at the Mobuoy illegal landfill site near Campsie could begin in 2028.

The site, discovered in 2013, covers more than 100 acres and contains an estimated 1.6 million tonnes of waste, of which 627,000 tonnes was deposited illegally.

Muir said the process will require final cost estimates, a business case, funding approval and contractor procurement before works start.

Procurement is expected to begin in April 2027, with works then taking three to five years to complete.

Two men were sentenced in June 2025 for their roles in the illegal operation.

Local politicians have criticised the proposed timeline, with SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan describing the 2028 start date as evidence of insufficient urgency.

Councillors from Derry City and Strabane District Council have also expressed frustration at their exclusion from a meeting held with the minister on 22 May.
