The Met Office has confirmed that temperatures across the UK, including Northern Ireland, will drop over the coming weekend after a period of unusually high readings.

Forecasters stated that the south east could see highs of 28C on Friday, with conditions easing further into Saturday. Outbreaks of rain are expected to move from the west across the country on Saturday.

By Sunday, temperatures are forecast to reach near-average levels. Northern and western areas are likely to see cloud and rain, while brighter spells may occur further east and south east.

Chief forecaster Chris Bulmer said the current hot spell is breaking down and that more changeable conditions with showers and possible thunderstorms will follow.

Temperatures are expected to remain closer to seasonal norms through the weekend and into next week, accompanied by rainfall for many areas.

The forecast follows a week in which record high temperatures were recorded in parts of England and Wales.
