Court ruling requires changes to legacy cases handling
A High Court ruling has found that the Police Ombudsman exceeded legal powers in legacy cases. The decision requires formal notices on reports reflecting the overreach.
DUP MLA Keith Buchanan raised the issue in the Northern Ireland Assembly. He stated that the judgment raises questions about the treatment of former police officers in legacy processes.
Buchanan said the ruling must lead to changes in how legacy cases are handled. He called for processes that are fair, lawful and balanced.
The MLA questioned compensation payments based on findings now discredited by the court. He asked what message this sends to serving officers.
Buchanan also raised concerns about public funds and the protection of the public purse.
The DUP will not accept changes to historical records of the Troubles. Buchanan said the courage and professionalism of officers must be recognised.
