A project run by the Belfast Bands Forum is teaching drumming to children in south Belfast.

Kendall, 11, had never played an instrument before joining the sessions at the Greater Village Regeneration Trust on the Donegall Road.

Danika, 12, said she decided to try drumming because her uncle had played bass drum.

Riley Mcauley leads the classes, teaching how to hold sticks, rhythms, accents, beats and tempo.

Harrison, 14, joined a marching band three years ago and said he can practice in his own time.

Carson, 10, has been drumming for 18 months after finding an instrument at home.

The forum said the sessions are the only structured musical tuition for many participants and have been introduced in six schools and community settings.

Darren Leighton from the forum said projects like this help challenge negative stereotypes about cultural traditions.

Zara Gregg from the Greater Village Regeneration Trust said the sessions give young people a weekly focus and encourage leadership.
