Representatives from Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council attended the Balmoral Show on Friday 15 May. They supported agri-businesses from the borough and met local producers.

The representatives connected with visitors and networked with stakeholders from the agri-food industry. They engaged with the Ulster Farmers’ Union, Rural Support Network and Food NI.

Lord Mayor Alderman Stephen Moutray stated that agri-business forms a core part of the borough’s economy. He noted its role in supporting jobs, families and rural communities.

Moutray added that council backing for local farmers and producers aids economic contributions and upholds food sector quality. He described the Balmoral Show as a platform to recognise this work and build industry links.

A Consumer Council report launched at the event surveyed 1,000 consumers. It found 87% express pride in Northern Ireland food and 88% wish to purchase more.

Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald MLA said her department prioritises the local food system. She highlighted benefits of shorter supply chains for value retention, lower environmental effects and resilience.

Archibald noted department efforts with industry, retailers and producers to ease access barriers and foster growth. Philippa McKeown-Brown, Acting Director of Strategy and Emerging Markets at the Consumer Council, stated consumers seek details on food origins, production and producers.
