First Minister Attends Mid Ulster Theatre Production on Violence Against Women
First Minister Michelle O'Neill attended the premiere of 'Called Out', a community theatre production by Craic Theatre in Mid Ulster. More than 1500 young people viewed the free performance, supported by Arts Council of Northern Ireland National Lottery funding.
The play addresses violence against women and girls in Northern Ireland. Since 2020, 30 women have been killed violently in the region, most by men known to the victims.
Actor Rónán Even Johnson performs the piece, incorporating recordings from five women who shared stories of abuse. The production examines social norms in how young men discuss women and girls.
Aoibhe Johnson Clarke and Cathal Clarke wrote and directed the show. Craic Theatre operates from Coalisland in Tyrone.
Plans call for expanding the production to other parts of Northern Ireland.
