Sinn Féin MLA Calls for Better Road Safety Measures in South Antrim
Sinn Féin South Antrim MLA Declan Kearney met with the Department for Infrastructure’s Northern Divisional Roads Manager and Network Development Manager to address recent road collisions in his constituency.
The discussion centred on safety issues around the Nutts Corner roundabout and A26 Moira Road, locations with prior serious traffic incidents.
Kearney stated that driver behaviour contributes to many accidents but traffic management on urban and rural roads requires ongoing review.
Road traffic collisions have increased across Northern Ireland and the island of Ireland this year, with fatalities in the north surpassing last year's figures for the same period.
Five fatalities occurred in road accidents over a 48-hour period two weeks ago, three in the South Antrim area.
PSNI statistics for the Easter weekend recorded 43 arrests for drink or drug driving and 667 speed detections.
Kearney called for shifts in driving attitudes and adherence to road safety basics, including speed control, avoiding phone use, no drink or drug driving, staying alert and wearing seatbelts.
He emphasised that all road users share responsibility for promoting safety, particularly on rural roads.
