Derry and Strabane Council Councillors Push for Ethical Procurement Policy Update
Councillors at Derry City and Strabane District Council have called for an update on the council's Ethical Procurement Policy. The policy accounts for bidders' involvement in human rights violations and permits exclusion of certain bidders from tender processes.
People Before Profit councillor Shaun Harkin stated during May's Governance and Strategic Planning Committee that the policy would enable the council to advocate for Palestine solidarity. He referenced Israel's actions against a flotilla in international waters, which involved the removal of seven people from Ireland, and efforts by the British Government to criminalise activists.
Sinn Féin councillor Emma McGinley supported obtaining an update on the policy as soon as possible. SDLP councillor Catherine McDaid stressed the need to resist criminalisation of the Palestine movement, noting occurrences both locally and elsewhere.
Derry City and Strabane District chief executive John Kelpie reported receiving a brief from the council's Lead Legal Services Officer. He confirmed an update would be presented to the council's next BDS group meeting and then to the committee.
