Education Authority Buys Land Planned for Strabane Athletic Stadium
The Education Authority has purchased land in Strabane, Tyrone, designated for Strabane Athletic's proposed multi-purpose sports arena. The acquisition occurred during the 2025-26 financial year. The authority plans to expand Knockavoe Special School and reduce traffic pressures around the school and nearby roads.
Strabane Athletic chairman Seamus McElroy stated the club learned of the land sale this week. He attributed the owners' decision to sell to prolonged delays in the planning process. The club supports Knockavoe Special School but expressed disappointment over the time and investment lost. McElroy said the club is working with the Education Authority to explore other options and affirmed the project vision persists.
The planning application faced delays after being called in during 2021 due to concerns about nearby housing-zoned land near Ardnalee, Knockavoe and Holy Cross College. It proceeded to the Planning Appeals Commission in Belfast last September. A report went to the Infrastructure Minister two months later, but no decision has been issued.
West Tyrone SDLP MLA Daniel McCrossan criticised Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins for the delays. He said the handling placed the development in jeopardy and called for answers on the land purchase timing.
Councillor Paul Gallagher urged discussions to find a solution benefiting both Knockavoe Special School and Strabane Athletic.
