Belfast Harbour Adds £4.5m Crane to Boost Cargo Operations at Stormont Wharf
Belfast Harbour received a new £4.5m Liebherr LHM 550 bulk crane last week for use at Stormont Wharf. The crane operates on HVO fuel initially and will switch to full electrical power after infrastructure upgrades, achieving zero emissions.
Port Director Michael Robinson stated the crane supports the port's commitment to modernise its fleet and improve cargo efficiency and resilience. He added that it advances regional prosperity and aligns with sustainability objectives.
This purchase forms part of a £208m investment under Belfast Harbour's five-year strategy Advance Regional Prosperity and its 2050 Masterplan, set for launch later this month.
The crane handles a range of vessels and cargo types at the deep water quay, including grain, animal feeds and coal, which account for 25% of the port's imports and exports.
Belfast Harbour manages 70% of Northern Ireland's seaborne imports and exports and 25% of the island's seaborne trade. It processes £26.7bn in goods yearly, contributing £8.8bn in gross value added through trade.
