Two Veteran Nurses Retire from South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust After 39 Years Each
Two nurses with 39 years of service each have retired from the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust. Anne Diver served as Plastics Trauma Co-Ordinator at Ulster Hospital. Mary Jo Thompson held the position of Assistant Director of Medical Specialties.
Anne Diver worked her entire career in the Plastics Department at Ulster Hospital. She started on the ward and spent the last decade in the Trauma Clinic. She cared for patients after the Omagh bombing.
Colleagues described Diver's knowledge and experience as invaluable to the plastics service. Acting Lead Plastic Surgery Trauma Co-ordinator Linda Symington noted Diver's skill and commitment to patient care made a difference to many people.
Mary Jo Thompson began nursing at Tyrone County Hospital in Omagh. She progressed through roles in the Southern Health Trust, Health and Social Care Board, and Public Health Agency. She joined South Eastern Trust in 2016 as Clinical Manager for Cancer Services.
Thompson led cancer services, outpatients, and medical records at Ulster and Lagan Valley Hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic. She contributed to opening the Macmillan Cancer Unit at Ulster Hospital. In May 2025, she added responsibility for Thompson House and led the Outpatients Modernisation Project.
Thompson stated nursing formed the backbone of her career and she focused on developing staff and improving patient services. Director of Unscheduled Care, Medicine and Cancer Services Marc Neil said Thompson's leadership brought improvements for patients.
