Delays in Maydown Bridge Repairs Isolate Benburb Residents in Tyrone
A retaining wall on the approach to Maydown Bridge near Benburb in County Tyrone partially collapsed on 2 October due to heavy rain. The bridge crosses the River Blackwater and connects south Tyrone to north Armagh. Seven months later, the route remains closed.
The Department for Infrastructure initially targeted mid-April for completion of repairs. That deadline passed. The department now expects work to finish by the end of May. It cited poor weather, resourcing issues, and an extension into Easter holidays as reasons for the delay.
Pauline McAnallen, who owns a shop in Benburb, reported a significant downturn in business since the collapse. James Kane, chairperson of the O'Neill Country Historical Society at Benburb Priory, noted a drop in footfall and damage to his car from potholes on diversion routes through Blackwatertown.
Stefan Birch, who runs an art studio and gallery at Benburb Priory, said customer complaints focus on access difficulties. Justin Toner, principal of Our Lady's Primary School in Tullysaran, County Armagh, stated families from Benburb now face commutes extended from five minutes to 20-25 minutes.
The department stated the bridge itself sustained no damage from the collapse or Storm Amy. It confirmed the structure passed inspections under national standards. The department apologised to the community, businesses, and road users for the inconvenience.
