Delays Push Benburb Bridge Repairs to Mid-April Amid Heavy Rain
Repairs to the Maydown Road Bridge in Benburb, County Tyrone, will finish by 10 April after delays from heavy rainfall. The Department for Infrastructure stated that recent prolonged rain slowed progress on the site. Utility companies must still reinstate fibre-optic cables, BT lines and water pipes damaged in the partial collapse.
The bridge collapsed in early October during Storm Amy. The incident closed the road and required detours for drivers between Benburb in Tyrone and Tullysaran in Armagh. Engineers and construction teams remain on site but await third-party infrastructure fixes before full reopening.
Local resident John Carty noted that the ongoing closure raises living costs for residents. He described routes taken now as flood-prone with many potholes. Carty added that travel times have lengthened from 10 minutes to more stressful drives that increase fuel use and vehicle wear.
Such storm-related damage highlights challenges for road infrastructure in Northern Ireland. The Department for Infrastructure oversees repairs across counties like Tyrone and Armagh where weather events often disrupt connectivity.
