Victorian Footbridge Returns to Castlerock After Nine-Year Repair Delay
A Victorian footbridge spanning railway tracks in Castlerock, County Londonderry, has been reinstalled after removal for repairs in 2017.
Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council spent £730,000 plus VAT on the work over nine years. The bridge dates to the 19th century.
Local resident Kurt Leege stated the community fought for its return after residents became upset when it was taken away. He called the bridge a symbol of the village.
Local historian Geoff Warke recalled children waving at steam trains from the bridge. He noted the temporary replacement structure was an eyesore.
Hostel manager Luke Smyth said footage of the nighttime reinstallation received wide attention on social media, with viewers sharing memories. He expects it to attract more visitors.
Mayor Oliver McMullan said the council invested to restore this piece of history, which he anticipates will draw tourists as few similar bridges remain.
Ten-year-old resident Seren said children waved from the bridge in the past and she looks forward to doing the same.
