Kneecap Release New Album Fenian Amid Legal Victory in Belfast
Belfast rap trio Kneecap released their second album Fenian on May 1st. The group members are Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, known as Mo Chara, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, known as Móglaí Bap, and JJ Ó Dochartaigh, known as DJ Próvaí.
A court rejected the Crown Prosecution Service's appeal to retry Mo Chara on a UK Terrorism Act charge. The charge related to allegedly displaying a Hizbullah flag at a gig in Kentish Town, north London, in November 2024. Mo Chara pressed a sign reading 'I'm a free mawn' against a window at the Hawthorn Bar in west Belfast during the case.
Kneecap recorded Fenian in sessions interrupted by court appearances. Producer Dan Carey worked on the album. Tracks address UK policies, Palestine solidarity, Troubles-era events, and personal struggles. Mo Chara stated the album responds to events including a witch hunt faced by the group.
The Hawthorn Bar in west Belfast serves as an unofficial base for Kneecap. The venue features a Kneecap logo on a table upstairs and hangs the sign from Mo Chara's court case downstairs.
Kneecap plans an album launch at Belfast's Limelight venue. They will perform at the AVA festival in Belfast on May 30th. The group donates arts funding won in a case against the British government to youth centres Glór na Móna off the Springfield Road and RCity on the Shankill Road.
Móglaí Bap's father Gearóid Ó Cairealláin was an Irish-language activist. The album's introduction track Éire go Deo samples words from Irish-language figures including Brendán Ó Fiach and Ciarán Mac Giolla Bhéin, president of Conradh na Gaeilge.
