Killyclogher Man Completes Omagh Half Marathon After Leg Amputation
Finbar McCann from Killyclogher completed the Omagh Half Marathon last month, two years after amputation of his leg. The amputation took place in February 2024 following a dirt bike accident in Australia in 2021.
McCann underwent multiple surgeries over two years to try to save his leg before the amputation. He then spent months in rehabilitation at a hospital in Melbourne, where he learned to walk again using a prosthetic.
During rehab, McCann asked about running and set goals to resume activities like running and cycling, which he enjoyed before the accident. He had previously run the Omagh Half Marathon.
McCann used a specialist prosthetic running blade to complete the race without mechanical issues or pain stopping him. He trains now with Omagh Triathlon Club for his first triathlon, which includes running, cycling, and swimming.
To cycle with one leg, McCann adapted his bike with a socket for his prosthetic limb using tools in his shed. He swims in a pool and runs on tracks and roads, planning lake swims at Loughmacrory when warmer.
McCann started an Instagram page documenting his training and recovery, which has over 2,000 followers. He created the page to show others facing amputation that active life remains possible.
