Record Entry Expected at Omagh Half Marathon
The 36th SPAR Omagh Half Marathon takes place on Sunday in Omagh with a record 5000 entrants. The event includes 4000 runners in the 13.1-mile half marathon and 1000 in the 5K race.
Race director Michael Ward stated the half marathon sold out in eight days. He noted this exceeds last year's record of 29 days for sellout. Ward attributed the quick sellout to the event's organization and appeal.
Ward highlighted growing participation in running locally, with new clubs forming and other races filling up. He said the event fits well in the early-year athletics schedule, offering a goal from January to March.
Top Irish distance runners compete in both races. Ward expects the women's course record may fall due to entrants' form.
Women entered include Ann-Marie McGlynn of Strabane AC, Nakita Burke of Letterkenny AC, and Catherine Whoriskey of City of Derry.
In the men's race, Gary Hegarty of Springwell, Michael Fox of Letterkenny, Stephen McAuley of Letterkenny, and Sergiu Ciobanu take part. Ward described both fields as competitive.
