Omagh Man Pleads Guilty to Cannabis Possession, Criticizes Government in Court
Ciaran McDermott, 32, from Meelmore Drive in Omagh, pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis at Omagh Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Police found around two grams of the Class B drug during a search at an Omagh address on January 6.
Defence barrister Craig Patton entered the plea by videolink. Patton stated McDermott has sought a legal prescription for cannabis.
McDermott told the court he no longer gives money to organized crime gangs. He referred to the British government as the biggest gangster to the public, citing legal cannabis production in the UK.
Deputy District Judge Austin Kennedy asked McDermott about a prior conviction and probation completion. McDermott replied he was not on probation. Patton clarified McDermott completed 120 hours of community service.
Judge Kennedy warned McDermott about his conduct. McDermott responded he was stating the law and not misbehaving. The judge adjourned proceedings briefly for Patton to speak with his client.
Upon resumption, Patton said McDermott wanted to apologize. Judge Kennedy required McDermott to do so directly. McDermott apologized for his behaviour but added he did not think he misbehaved.
Judge Kennedy adjourned the case to June 2 for a pre-sentence report. He directed Patton to attend in person.
