Primary Pupils Judge Speeding Drivers in Ards and North Down Road Safety Trial
Pupils from Clandeboye Primary School in Ards and North Down took part in a pilot road safety programme called Kids Court. The scheme involved the Policing and Community Safety Partnership working with the PSNI and NI Road Policing Safety.
Motorists caught speeding near the school in the morning could choose between accepting penalty points and a fine or attending the Kids Court. There, Primary 7 pupils heard explanations from the drivers.
The pupils discussed consequences of speeding in school zones and risks to children as road users. The goal was to prompt drivers to consider their actions.
Ards and North Down PCSP chair Councillor Pete Wray supported the programme. He stated that direct input from young people as potential victims can have more effect than fines or points. Wray hopes the initiative expands across the borough after its success at Clandeboye Primary.
One Primary 7 pupil named Ellie described the session as interactive. She expressed hope that the drivers learned a lesson and shared her ambition to become a police officer for road safety.
P7 teacher Mrs Robinson called it a great experience to host the PCSP and PSNI at the school.
The Kids Court supports PCSP efforts to cut speeding and boost road safety through education and community methods.
