Public Inquiry Examines Economic Effects of Sperrin Mountains Gold Mine Proposal
A public inquiry into a proposed gold mine and processing plant near Greencastle in the Sperrin Mountains entered its second week on Monday. The inquiry takes place at the Strule Arts Centre in Omagh.
Representatives from the Department for Infrastructure, the Department for Environment, Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency attend the sessions. Local community members acting as third-party objectors participate alongside Dalradian Gold Ltd representatives and members of the Save Our Sperrins campaign group.
This week the inquiry addresses economic appraisal, employment and skills, financial risk, market volatility, investment, and foreign direct investment. Sessions also cover local spend, public revenues, community fund and benefits, social impact, mine closure, and policing.
More than 100 people attended the opening day last Monday. The inquiry continues for three days this week and runs until June.
