Larne Probus Club Secures National Lottery Funds for 50th Anniversary Book
The Probus Club of Larne has received funding from the National Lottery Community Fund to support its activities. The grant will finance the publication and launch of a book chronicling 50 years of the club since its founding in 1974 with assistance from the Rotary Club of Larne.
Club members meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the Halfway House in Ballygally. They listen to talks by visiting speakers and then have lunch. Members come from varied backgrounds and form friendships through regular gatherings.
The book draws from club minutes and includes photos of outings and local sites of interest. A launch event takes place at Larne Museum & Arts Centre on Thursday, April 23, where committee members who compiled the book will speak to members and guests.
The club organises annual outings and biennial lunches with guests, partners, and widows of deceased members. It supports local charities and maintains ties with the Rotary Club of Larne.
Plans include publicising activities to the pensioner community with trial visit invitations. The club surveyed members' IT skills and will offer training to boost interest and usage.
Probus clubs consist of retired and semi-retired people and operate as non-sectarian, non-political groups across Britain, Ireland, and elsewhere. Their aim is to foster regular meetings for those in retirement to connect with peers.
