Sisters Launch Campaign for Financial Support to Children After Fatal Dangerous Driving Incidents
Shauneen and Sarah Butler have launched Butler's Law, a campaign for legislation to require individuals convicted of causing death by dangerous driving to provide financial support to the children of the deceased until adulthood.
The sisters lost their father, Con Butler, in a hit-and-run collision in West Belfast on September 23, 2001. Shauneen was eight years old and Sarah was five at the time.
The campaign addresses the lack of support for children and families after such losses. Shauneen Butler stated that the sudden death forced her to grow up quickly and had a lasting impact, taking years to grieve.
She noted that convicted individuals often serve short prison terms and resume their lives, while families face ongoing pressures without aid.
The proposed measure aims to assist affected children financially and act as a deterrent to dangerous driving.
Shauneen Butler indicated that requiring support from offenders could prevent future tragedies by encouraging caution on the roads.
