Community Choirs Sing Across Lough Neagh Sites to Address Algal Blooms
Community choirs performed at multiple sites around Lough Neagh on Sunday in an event called Sing for the Lough. Five choirs participated simultaneously, singing a song titled Water is Life written by Una McCann, director of one choir.
McCann stated she composed the song to connect personally with the local issue and community. She said the purpose was to voice concerns for the lough and unite people through music to draw notice to its condition.
Lough Neagh has experienced green discoloration for three summers from blue-green algal blooms. A Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs spokesperson called it a serious environmental and public health matter addressed with urgency.
Minister Andrew Muir recognised public concern over the lake's state, especially among nearby residents. He noted the crisis developed over decades with no immediate solutions, but restoration remains feasible.
A Lough Neagh Action Plan targets nutrient reduction and lake recovery over years. The department reported ongoing implementation of its measures.
