National Trust Closes Crom Estate Campsite in Fermanagh
The National Trust has closed its campsite at Crom Estate in Fermanagh. The decision follows a review of accommodation sites including cottages, bothies and campsites across Northern Ireland. Officials examined income generation and contributions to conservation work.
Sinn Féin MLA Ainé Murphy for Fermanagh South Tyrone contacted the public expressing disappointment over the closure. She noted the site served as a destination for travellers to experience Fermanagh's outdoor facilities and natural heritage. Its location enabled visitors to explore the area and support nearby towns, attractions and businesses.
Murphy stated the closure raises economic concerns in rural Fermanagh. She highlighted tourism's role in growth, especially with the area's extension into Fáilte Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands initiative. This aims to boost visitor numbers, cross-border tourism and local businesses.
The MLA urged the National Trust to reconsider the decision. She suggested options like seasonal operation or revised pricing to retain the facility.
A National Trust spokesperson said the charity reviewed its holidays portfolio to secure a sustainable future. The Crom Campsite has been removed from the portfolio. The organization is considering local options and will assist affected guests with alternative accommodation or full refunds.
The Trust plans to continue offering access to properties in Northern Ireland's scenic locations.
