Omagh Arts Group Trains for Belfast Marathon Relay
Sixteen members and volunteers from Skyzdalimit, a creative arts group in Omagh for adults with learning disabilities or autism, plan to participate in the Belfast City Marathon Relay on May 3.
The group aims to raise 5000 pounds for the charity, which has 40 members and affiliates with Mencap. They have trained and started fundraising efforts.
Skyzdalimit organises a coffee morning on April 12 from 9.30am to noon at Killyclogher Parish Hall. A JustGiving page supports online donations.
Chairperson Sheena McCooey stated the group works to change perceptions of people with learning disabilities or autism, promote their inclusion, build confidence and enable community contributions.
McCooey added that the group seeks to show such conditions do not stop people from reaching goals or staying fit and healthy. Members support each other in a positive environment.
The marathon effort aligns with Mencap's Healthier Me Programme, which encourages healthier lifestyles for adults with learning differences. McCooey called Mencap a major influence on Skyzdalimit.
