Derry City and Strabane Council Submits Strabane Bid for UK Town of Culture 2028
Derry City and Strabane District Council submitted an application this week nominating Strabane for UK Town of Culture 2028. The bid highlights the town's cultural heritage and creative activities.
Council officials collaborated with arts organisations, community groups, schools, and businesses to develop the application. The narrative centres on Strabane's resilience as a rural border town and its potential for cultural transformation.
Mayor Cllr Ruairí McHugh expressed confidence in the bid. He stated Strabane offers strong cultural heritage and community passion, deserving national recognition and investment.
Local author Brian McGilloway supported the effort. He noted the area's literary history and current arts scene, including youth groups, filmmakers, and cross-border creative classes that foster connection.
Comedian Emer Maguire, from Strabane, backed the nomination. She described the town's kindness and resilience, arguing it merits recognition.
Kieran Kennedy, Chair of Strabane Business Improvement District, endorsed the bid. He pointed to high vacancy rates in the town centre and said the title could attract visitors and investment to aid businesses.
Aodhán Harkin, Chair of Strabane Local Growth Partnership, also gave support. He called the opportunity a platform for communities to engage in a year-long cultural programme.
The UK Town of Culture contest, launched in January by Culture Minister Lisa Nandy, offers £3 million to the winner. Shortlisted towns will receive £60,000 each to prepare full bids, with finalists announced later this year.
