Derry City and Strabane District Council prepares a bid to enter Strabane in the UK's inaugural Town of Culture competition. The Tyrone town aims for the 2028 title, which carries a £3m prize to fund a year-long cultural programme.

Culture Minister Lisa Nandy launched the competition in January. Towns must submit expressions of interest by the end of March. Shortlisted towns receive £60,000 to develop full bids.

Three finalists will be selected: one small town, one medium town and one large town. The winner gains £3m. Each runner-up receives £250,000.

A council report identifies Strabane as the suitable candidate from the district. It highlights the town's history, culture and community facilities. The Alley Theatre and Conference Centre has operated for 20 years. A town centre regeneration programme is under way.

Council officers have conducted initial discussions with stakeholders in Strabane. Local councillors will consider endorsing the bid at the Business and Culture committee meeting this week.

The report states that a full bid requires broad community and stakeholder involvement. It notes the process will be competitive with entries from towns across the UK.
