South Eastern Regional College held its annual Excellence Awards for Downpatrick and Newcastle campuses on 26 March at the Downpatrick campus. Students, staff, friends and family attended the event.

Guests received a drinks reception. A short film featuring students followed. Certificates and awards recognised outstanding student achievements and success.

Tommy Martin, Principal and Chief Executive of SERC, presented awards. Councillor Philip Campbell, Chair of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, presented the Apprentice of the Year Award, sponsored by the Newry, Mourne and Down Labour Market Partnership.

Mark Brashier, SERC Student Governor, gave a vote of thanks.

Grainne McVeigh, SERC Governing Body member and Master of Ceremonies, stated the college celebrates student course successes and rewards activity in entrepreneurship and Student’s Union work. She noted these elements provide real-life learning and aid student development.

McVeigh said SERC records the highest achievement rate in Northern Ireland colleges, with 91% across courses last academic year.

She reported four apprentices competed in Skillbuild and WorldSkills UK Finals in November, one winning a medal. Hospitality students achieved a record medal haul at the IFEX food exhibition. Performing arts students succeeded at the NicMac dance competition. Students joined the Washington Ireland programme for young leaders. A student film appeared at the Cinemagic festival.
