Northern Health Trust Makes Body-Worn Cameras Permanent in Antrim Hospital ED
The Northern Health and Social Care Trust board approved body-worn cameras as a permanent feature in the emergency department at Antrim Area Hospital on March 26. The decision followed a 12-week trial with senior staff last year.
The trial showed the cameras improved safety and aided management of volatile situations. No serious incidents occurred during the period. Staff reported higher confidence and better de-escalation of potential aggression.
Gill Murphy, Executive Director of Nursing at the Trust, noted staff observed positive behaviour changes in some patients when cameras were present. The devices had no effect on patient care and preserved patient privacy and dignity.
The Trust plans to introduce the cameras at Causeway Hospital emergency department soon. Twelve additional cameras will be purchased for that site.
Anne O’Reilly, Chair of the Trust Board, stated that while most emergency department visitors respect staff, even isolated unacceptable behaviour is too much. She highlighted rising violence and aggression toward staff in recent years.
Cameras record audio and video only when activated by staff in escalating situations. Patients and service users receive notice before and after recording. Signage will inform visitors of possible camera use.
Use of the cameras remains optional for eligible staff. Strict controls govern data handling, with audits and consideration of equality, human rights, data protection, privacy, and dignity.
